Finally The Mayor's Race Heats Up

For a race which many political junkies thought would be a stew of racial politics and possibly the last gasp of the "machine", the 2009 Atlanta Mayoral race to this point has been mostly blah.

Until today.

A group labeled "The Black Leadership Forum" sent out a scathing email encouraging Atlanta's black leaders to line up behind candidate Lisa Borders.
At the end of the day, “when the morning comes,” a black agenda would better enable us to have our interests respected by and our influence realized in any administration.
Galloway had the scoop.

But Henry gets the gold star for the best headline (The Mayoral Machine Goes Haywire)

We're finally rolling up the first hill of the ride. Hands in the air and hang on.

I understand that upcoming Census data will answer the question of many:

Has Atlanta's demographics changed from a voting majority of poor blacks to white ex-surburbanites?

One might think the pols have an early street sense of this...

The data will reveal much. Could be like Pennington though, in that we just are out here "perceiving" stuff.

Meanwhile we know that all the ATL housing projects are now gone... where plenty of local pols were able to mobilize many vans fulls of voters to the polls from. (No wonder my councilperson, Moore, resisted the demolition of Perry Homes, but I diverge...)

While there may be some good amount of new white ex-suburbanites now in City of Atlanta, I see them mostly out preening for one another in hipster hangouts in EAV and Midtown, mostly yapping about e and hair products. Hardly local politics, in other words.

I'd fear them as a voting block about as much as I'd fear this blog ever getting any real political scoops.
