Friday Night Lights

My beloved Colquitt County Packers will play the Grayson Rams this Friday night in Loganville. While checking the ticket situation, I noticed the following on the Grayson website:
We need a volunteer to work the TDC parking lot beginning at 4pm. I have had numerous  emails and calls about parking, so I think that they will be bringing a large following.  I  believe that last year we had some issues with them getting here early and parking in that  lot.
Yes. We travel.

And yes. We tailgate.

Welcome to high school football - South Georgia style.

It's Different

Bill Waller, described by the proprietors of SWGAPolitics as the resident neo-con, although given his stances and reading list, paleo-con may be more apt, at least calls the recent effigy of President Obama found in Plains,Ga insenstive, but then goes on to spin a wild hypothetical of a Obama supporter planting the heinous item in order to "silence the good and decent people that have also exercised their political free speech rights with signs and tea bags". It really is all Obama's fault.

Fellow SWGAPolitics writer Tom follows with the usual whine about any criticism of Obama being labelled racism, then follows with a rather incomplete history lesson.
I guess it never dawned on you, with your Phd. in history, that effigies are an age old tool of political criticism. They were hung for many American Presidents. Not just the black ones. No, they were hung and often burned for all kinds of reasons. So why is it now that it’s suddenly racist?
Oh, I don't know Tom. Maybe because suddenly we have a black President? It's this little thing called context. Tom points out one side of history - true, effigies have always been political tools of the small minded - but conveniently ignores the other half - that this particular effigy was of a black man in an area of the country with a history of hanging black men for no better reason than looking at a person the wrong way.

Finally, the cherry is placed on the "just doesn't get it" sundae by the Americus Times-Recorder who proposes it may have been done by foreigners.

Is it to much to expect people of intelligence to understand why the image of hanging the first black President showing up in a small southern time might have a message that reaches deeper than the surface? We can work on them actually acknowledging it later.

More Hometown News

Sigh. I suppose I have to say something about this.
Moultrie resident Gerald Psalmond is sick and tired of people who believe in the separation of church and state. He’s so tired, in fact, he wrote a letter to The Moultrie Observer saying so:
What follows is a rambling screed about praying, minorities, the evils of the ACLU, majority rule and camel races. Yes, camel races.

So...what can I say? Everyone's home town has its share of kooks.

Lest you forget, Moultrie is also home to a guy who got a DUI.....on a lawn mower.

And the guy who was tasered at the Wal-Mart.

And the guy who wasn't dead, just drunk.

At least it's never dull.

Fish Story

Down in Willacoochee, Nashville resident Chad Leonard landed a state record gar.

The record did not come easy. Leonard fought the fish for an hour, shot it twice, then drove around with the creature for hours before weighing it. When he did, the Nashville resident discovered he’s the new Georgia title holder for catching a Lepisosteus osseus.
If this seems excessively violent, you've never met a gar. These fish are like relics from the Jurassic era.

Hometown News

X-Files comes to Moultrie.
The video was shot from the yard of M´s home and in the nearby vicinity of the home, just east of Moultrie Georgia within the last couple of years. These contactees are not particularly interested in going public because they are Christians and do not want to be ostracized by many in the narrow minded local Christian community who think UFOs are the work of the devil.

Standing in my yard once I thought I saw a UFO. Then I drank another beer.

Local Boy Does Good

I suppose I should go to this.
On Monday afternoon, Sen. Saxby Chambliss of Moultrie will kick off his reelection campaign on his hometown’s courthouse square.
I need to check on things at the southern compound anyway.

More Water Reports

More from the South Georgia hinterlands.

Spoke to a farmer friend this morning and even though this part of the state is still not as bad as the Atlanta region, it's still bad. Six months ago, while certain politicians under the Gold Dome were fiddling while Atlanta parched, the farmers of South Georgia were planting cotton and peanuts in dry fields, rolling the dice that rain would come. Fortunately for them, it did. Just enough for survival and not much else.

My friend told stories of folks extending their deep wells further because the aquifer is going lower and lower. That would be the Floridan Aquifer which is supposed to be practically indestructible. The problem is it is recharged by rainfall, both here and in the uplands of North Georgia, and ain't nobody getting any right now.

Bottom line is the opinion down here seems to be, don't come calling Atlanta, cause we ain't got none either.

More business to deal with down on the farm. Don't trash the place in my absence.

Water Wars

Not 100 feet into the Moultrie City limits, a local radio talk show host was heard to say the following.
"Get ready for the water wars, folks. And Atlanta is the enemy."

It's a story as old as reckoning and I have a feeling it's about to get worse.

Hometown News Fruforal

Picking on the home town will always perk the ears. Some in the Atlanta community are taking exception with a recent Moultrie Observer article on 8th Congressional District Republican candidate Rick Goddard. Flackattack as usual pulls no punches.
I don't expect some of the smaller newspapers in our state to be the most sophisticated newspapers. I do expect them to hold the line on a couple of pretty basic concepts in journalism, like balance and fact-checking. If you are not going to include an opposing viewpoint, the latter concept becomes even more important to protect the truth.

I could write something here like I expect big time blogs to look at the whole of a paper's work instead of cherry picking one article to blast the rubes down south for their "aw shuckin'" ways but would that really be necessary?

Having said that, Tondee's Tavern has a point. The article is a string of Goddard quotes with little journalistic context flesh out the piece. As I have said before, reporter Lori Glenn is usually very good and this particular article is a little surprising in its structure. Lazy reporting? Editorial butchery? An honest effort that just wasn't a home run? At this point, we do not really know but I have contacted another Moultrie boy, Observer editor Dwain Walden, for clarification.

Heck, maybe what this situation needs is an country boy stuck in the city to mediate before we have another horrible bush war between the "two Georgias".

Hometown News

We need to expand The Blotter.
A man who was found sleeping at the end of a movie in the Moultrie Stadium Cinemas asked to see the parts of the movie he missed. ~The Moultrie Observer

Well, why wouldn't he?

Headin South

There ain't much going on up here now that Jacobs has shown his true colors and the Democrats got spanked again. Besides, there's land matters to attend to at the old homestead.

Of course this means I will have to drive through what I now refer to as the Steve Davis Memorial Abomination aka the Hudson Bridge interchange. It's a wonder of happiness to residents of Henry County. For this rest of us on I-75? Doom and apocalypse.

I'm considering starting driving tours through the infernal labryinth for the pave over everything crowd.

More Hometown News

I promise my hometown really isn't so weird. Okay, it's a small southern town, so it is pretty weird.

Police recently tasered a man in the Wal-Mart. Note the address.
A Moultrie man was apprehended Monday afternoon after he was allegedly seen knocking items off shelves at Wal-Mart then was uncooperative with officers...Johnny Lee Collins Jr., 33, of 180 Trailer Park Road, was charged Monday with obstruction and disorderly conduct.

Feel free to hum the banjo tune from "Deliverance" with just a hint of Caribbean backbeat while reading the story.

Hometown News

A pause before the storm.

From the Moultrie Observer.
A Moultrie police officer on patrol at 9:08 Saturday saw a man, later identified as Xxxxxxxxxx, allegedly driving a Snapper lawn mower on North Main Street. The officer spotted a possible alcoholic beverage in the driver’s hand, so he pulled the tractor over, police reports said.

Two things.

I'm still in Atlanta.

The only given reason for pulling the suspect over was spotting him with an alcoholic beverage in his hand, not because he was driving a lawn mower down main street.

Smoke In South Georgia

Yes, we've had a few days of smoke in Atlanta but the above is a picture a friend sent from Valdosta. The smoke and ash in the area is so prevalent school children have not been able to leave buildings for days at a time. Just a little perspective next time you smell smoke in the air.

I Fought The Flint

I was cleaning up a closet and found this old t-shirt. It's from the 1994 Flood of the Century. I worked flood relief in Albany, Ga for four weeks. It in no way shape or form fits any more but I can't bring myself to throw it away. Funny how even clothing can become tokens of our past.

We Are Altenative Fuel

Why, only a few weeks after the opening of the movie "We Are Marshall", do I suspect a wave of "We Are ______" statements forthcoming?

“We will make an example for South Georgia and the southeastern United States.
We’re not just talking about alternative fuel. In Mitchell County, we are
alternative fuel. We are on the right track"

So sayeth Mitchell County Commission Chairman Ben Hayward.

I shouldn't kid. Yesterday, I had the choice between witnessing the ground breaking of an alternative fuel plant in my homeland of South Georgia or witnessing a contempt hearing on porn in my adopted city of Atlanta. By now, you know what I chose. I can't say my mama would be proud but she would probably snicker once I left the room.

Good for F.U.E.L. Good for South Georgia. Good for us all.

Unintentional Small Town Humor

The city of Berlin, Ga is getting a bullet-proof vest. Yes, a single vest. It's not really funny and it might one day save an officer's life but my immediate thought was Barney's one bullet.
A couple of other things. Berlin is pronounced BURR-lin not burr-LIN. And nearby there is a town named, you guessed it, Barney.
