More Insanity On Marietta St?

The blog Eye on Sports Media is reporting that AJC UGA beat reporter Chip Towers has been reassigned to General Assignment. Now, with no bureau or distribution in Athens, the obvious conclusion is Chip will cover Atlanta stories - from Bogart.

To twist the mobius strip further, it is alledged Atlanta stalwart Tim Tucker is now on the UGA beat- from Atlanta.

If that's truly the situation, things on Marietta St have truly entered the realm of the absurd.

The Sports page is now a joke. It has dwindled to 4-5 pages. I got my home-delivered paper on Monday morning, and it had no mention of the results of the Hawks' playoff game on Sunday night, which was played in Atlanta and ended at 10:30. And again this morning - no mention of the results of last night's Braves game, which ended at around 11:15. Pitiful.

Let me try to offer some perspective as a former sports journalist ... but it's perfectly normal to adjust beats on a regular basis, primarily because it provides a fresh approach to the reporting and prevents writers from getting too cozy with those they cover.

Geographically it makes little sense, but as a business decision it's actually a common one. I haven't talked to Chip in a while, but I know he's done General Assignment writing in the past and also worked as the College Football Editor for a time period.

Chip was a GA reporter with me when I was at the paper. He'll do a good job. And I don't think coverage will suffer too much if the UGA reporter is in Atlanta -- it's a commute, but a doable one, as my wife will attest -- and besides, it's hard for me to imagine that UGA coverage is where things will be shorted. It's the sports section's bread and butter.

I'm much more worried about this new paper in the infomercial.

I defer to the judgment of the newsmen on this on. Although to a lawyman it seems crazy.

Mike didn't we once agree Tim Tucker was one of the best columnist the Sport page had? Kind of goes back to the whole missing local feature writers thing...

Now about that infomercial...
