Walkscore

Given the state of transportation in Atlanta and all the talk of multi-use development, I thought this was pretty cool.

Walkscore

Try your house. Then try various neighborhoods. Say what you will about Atlantic Station but so far it has the highest score of anything I've found in the ATL.

Hat tip to my absent friend Don who is currently wandering around Oz.

Mine was 57, but I thought it would be higher considering I'm within a mile of Virginia Highland, Ansley Mall, and all the shopping lining Highland in Morningside.

Yeah... it's good at measuring how much retail is theoretically within walking distance. It doesn't actually measure connectivity of the streets (there is actually a GA Tech professor who worked out a formula to plug into a GIS system to calculate that -- the Fairlie-Poplar neighborhood came out with the strongest connectivity in that respect.). Generally, connectivity is a really good measure of how walkable a neighborhood is, though it's not a hard-and-fast rule.

One very important thing walkscore doesn't measure is access to transit.

In any case, this is just a couple of things even the Walkscore guy admits the tool doesn't measure.

Oh yeah... I got a 72. My place is right around the corner from the Krispy Kreme.

Taking a closer look, I noticed the map seems to think there's a Kroger where there's actually Mary Mac's.

I got an 80. Was also amused to see that the closest theatre is the Belvedere, which is a porn theatre and, I believe, closed.

My score was only 26. It means that my neighborhood is not very walkable. But actually i go by car much more often than on foot. So at drivescore.fizber.com i ve found another service similar to this one. With drive score one can see how close establishements are by car.

Ha-ha-ha...I spend almost 4 hours checking drivescore for addresses of all my friends and relatives. Mine is not the worst at http://drivescore.fizber.com/

I really liked this!
