Jay Bookman Gets It...Maybe

In the midst of his continuing campaign to expose how the Bush Administration is as D.L. Hughley put it on Bill Maher "mired in bullsh*t", Jay Bookman offers a revealing bit of self-examination:

To cite an example uncomfortably close to home, newspapers have long embraced the mythology — backed by some 500 years of history — that what we do is indispensable to an informed society. That mythology has now been exploded with the arrival of the Internet, pushing the industry into a desperate search for a narrative that better fits the world around us. We are coming to realize that if you ever let your mythology become too distant from how the world really works, you're in trouble.

I've always wondered why Jim Wooten, as ass backwards as you can get at times, at least cautiously embraces the new world with his blog "Thinking Right", while Jay Bookman, a talented writer with great grasp of the issues, sits on the sidelines. Local media insiders have told me Jay is not comfortable with the new medium. Well, maybe he's getting past the discomfort zone. I certainly hope so. He's a voice the community needs.

Maybe I should start reading the AJC again. I normally start my day with:
WSJ
New York Times
MSNBC
Washington Post
Huffington Post
Daily Kos

Maybe I'll start reading the AJC community blogs when they get going. What do you guys read on a regular basis?

I think Bookman's just plain shy. Simple as that. I totally freaked him out once by saying "Hey Jay!" and handing him some promotional literature. (A TrueGritz flyer of all threatening things.) He looked completely ashen that someone recognized him and called him by name.

Not all of us are publicity ho's. Shame, because the ones who need to be more public-minded in such self-promotional times, uh, just won't hunt.

Then again, maybe he was just bedazzled by my "waaa-hu-mal-en heat." (Agador Spartacus in The Birdcage) Chances are I was just crocked and obnoxious. Like that would ever happen...

I think it may have been the crocked and obnoxious...I ran into him at Manuel's, and he denied his existence as Jay Bookman (although his companion confirmed it).

As I was crocked at the time, I can't tell you whether he's shy or abhors drunks (although, if you abhor drunks, Manuel's may not be the place for you).

Yeah Annonymous Richard. Why anyone goes to Manuel's to do anything other than drink heavily and be totally obnoxious is beyond me too. It sure ain't for the sex.

I've always enjoyed the Jay Bookman posts I see on commondreams.org. Oops! That's not an especially centrist site, is it?

On it Grift. I had no idea. Don't pay a lot of attention. I always assumed Bookman was into bigger and better things. I mean the only time I see his stuff is when I link to it from the larger tubes.

Is he really THAT shy.

Hey. Bookie-bookie? We really got a hold on you.

Really got a hold on you-hoo-hoo-hoo.

We don't need The damn Beatles. But we really would like to see your face in the place.

Bookiee, bookie, bookie,
Pullleehehehessss?

I'm just tellin' ya

Je-he-he-he's.

There's a thing called love.
