The Funny

I go out of town for a few days...
"[Conservatives are less of a power online]because we have family lives because we don’t abort our kids and we believe in capitalism so we go to work." ~Erick Erickson
I'm no expert on the funny. But I have walked this Earth for close to forty years and I own a blog so that must mean something.

In my experience, the funny requires two things.

One, it must contain a kernel of the truth.

Well, we could stop there but let's give the comment the small benefit of the doubt and proceed.

But ultimately, to be the funny something has to actually be funny.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

I have to agree with your comment at Peach Pundit. I'm clearly a Democrat, but seriously . . that is in no way funny.

I think its hilarious. I guess it doesn't meet your humor threshold of a "Bush is stupid" joke.

JDP could you point out a few examples of the classic "Bush is stupid" jokes on this site?

Feel free to use the search function.

Yes, we Democrats can only appreciate Bush as chimp jokes.

That joke isn't funny unless you totally drink the right wing kool-aid.

I guess Erick is too busy working and loving capitalism to grok that for a joke to really be a joke, both the teller and the listener should end up laughing. And, I should add, they should both be laughing *at the joke* (instead of how I'm laughing *at Erick* right now).

Okay, I'm off to abort another baby and eat Cheetos on the couch! God I hate freedom.

Am I the only who's wondering why this hasn't been picked up by the Macon media? Seems to me that if you have an elected official throwing down stereotypical and offensive 'jokes' in a national forum, someone ought to let his constituents know ... right?

I mean, hell, McClatchy even had someone at the friggin' thing.

You know, I always find the funniest jokes are the ones that have to be defended and explained to the reader how funny they really are.

What a riot! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

Ah, but there is a grain of truth, not so much by spoken words, but the truths those words illuminate.

There's nothing quite like a propagandist casting his impotence as a result of his faction's boogeymen.

This would be funny if said faction hadn't been running this country into the ground for the past 14 years, while passing themselves off as American.

What grain of truth is there?

I'm a democrat but I haven't aborted any babies and I have a very high-demand, stressful job.

If you're going to say things like that, be prepared to tell us where the "grain of truth" actually lies.

Ironically, the only people I know who've had abortions are self-professed Republicans and the only people I know who don't have full time jobs are indepdendents or Republicans. So, nice try.

Ok, I was probably too vague. Let me try again:

The grain of truth in this episode is the mentality that is exposed by making such a biased, slanted statement as a dodge of the question, then being either too cowardly (or too aligned ) to fess up to having done so.

As a whole, the question, Erick's answer, and the implications of that answer, form a nutshell description of what 'conservative' means in this day and age: an alignment of domestic evils.
