Words From The Past

Much has been made this week of echoes from the past. Let's take a moment to reflect on the words of William Hartsfield - Atlanta Mayor at the time of the Temple Bombing.

"Whether they like it or not, every political rabble-rouser is the godfather of these cross burners and dynamiters who sneak about in the dark and give a bad name to the South," he said. "It is high time the decent people of the South rise and take charge."
Wisdom.

And in 2008 thanks to the current escalation of nastiness in Sen. Maverick's campaign, we can add so, so many other parts of the country.

Are y'all comparing the current controversy over idiotic things yelled at McCain events by idiotic supporters to the inflammatory statements uttered by elected Southern leaders in the 50's and 60's?

If so, y'all have no sense of perspective. And to use Hartsfield's quote about "political rabble rousers" completely misses his point. Unless, of course, you can actually find a McCain quote encouraging supporters to lynch his opponent.

But, of course, you can't do that, because no such thing has been said. Instead, you try to make a legitimate argument about the soundness of Obama's judgment of character into something Ross Barnett would have done.

Bringing up Obama's past associations to Ayers or Wright is fair game, no matter how inconvenient you find it. It's not an "escalation of nastiness" to do so. If McCain had been friendly with an anti-abortion extremist who belonged to a group that had bombed clinics in the past, would it not be fair game even if McCain insisted the guy was just "some guy who lives in the neighborhood"? Of course it would.

So quit comparing any mention of Ayers or Wright as trying to provoke racial hostility. It only makes y'all look ignorant of Southern history.

Well that just flew right past your head didn't it?

And thank you sir, but I am far from ignorant of my southern history.

Grift: Well that just flew right past your head didn't it?

Karl: Please. You're the one still wondering who the hell Nikita Khrushchev is.

You've written nothing original or important in months. All you have is snark. Enjoy your dwindling little corner of the internet.

All I have is snark? That's the best compliment I've ever received from a troll!

Obama's poor judgement in associating himself with Wright, Ayers, Dorn, Rezko et al is certainly worth discussing.

Since only one of those idiots is black, how does it foster racial animosity?

Good question Dale. It makes you wonder why these people say the things they do.

There are whack-jobs on both sides.

... and Al Jazeera wouldn't possibly cherry pick a few nutbags out of the crew. ABC maybe, but not Al Jazeera.
